How The Holy Spirit Enables You To Come To Christ

I have never been one for easy believerism. There always has been something wrong with people going up front at church meetings, saying a prayer, and then believing that they are true Christian believers.

In my many years of Christian service, I have seen many first-time decisions for Christ fail within the first year. It seems that when the novelty wears off, interest for continuing the Christian life wanes, and the person falls back into the world. Why is that so?

I have spent much time in prayer, trying to find out why some people come to Christ, put their full trust in Him, and then go on to be stable, fruitful church members, some of these have led hundreds or even thousands to Christ themselves! And yet, others, with the same or even more potential, fall quickly way, and we never hear from them again.

I have wondered why I have been able to continue going on for Christ all these years (44 of them), going through all the highs and lows of life, and yet my faith has never failed! Oh yes, it has faltered many times, and I have gone through my “storm and stress” years where I knew that I was not living up to the standard that God expects of me. But yet, in my darkest moments, something inside of me kept me aware of the love and grace of God, and I never found myself departing from my desire to fellowship with God, or to walk away from His Word. There were times that I did not fellowship with other Christians at times, because I felt too ashamed because of my substandard lifestyle. But my inner faith and my hunger after something better in God kept me believing that one day I would emerge back into the light.

Yes, I have had times when I have felt that I have walked through the valley of the shadow of death and have wondered whether I would ever come out the other side. One day, I thought about what would happen if I died right then and I found myself standing before God. I worked out if He asked me what right I had to enter into His heaven, I would answer him by saying that all I had was that Jesus died for me on the Cross. He said to me, “That’s all you need, and you need to know that is the only thing you have always needed.”

You see, in my darkest hour, I received the greatest and most comforting revelation from the heart of God that I have ever received. It was after that the slow climb up to a more acceptable progress in sanctification started to happen in my life.

But I could have been discouraged in those dark times and slipped back into the world! What made me continue to believe in His promises, even though I could not see the light at the end of the tunnel at that time?

PERSONAL TESTIMONY

I first became a Christian in an Assembly Of God church in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, in 1966, under the ministry of Trevor Chandler. This was the first time I realized that I needed to make a definite, personal commitment to Jesus Christ as my Saviour. I guess I heard the voice of Christ in my heart then, but did not have the maturity to recognize it as such, but I obeyed it and that is the main thing.

About two years later, I felt the need to have a closer relationship with God as a person and set out to seek him more earnestly. One night, in the middle of a golf course, in desperation, I told Him that people had been able to introduce me to church, Bible Study, prayer, appropriate Christian living, etc., but no one had been able to introduce me directly to God. So, I said “I am Paul, and you are God, and I am very pleased to meet you” Immediately, I felt as though I were lit up inside, and I heard Him say, “Paul, we have been waiting for this for a long time.” It was a comforting, assuring voice that spoke deep in the back of my mind. This has continued from that time until this.

Although I have been involved with Anglican and Baptist churches during the last 20 years, I am now an Elder of St Aidan’s Presbyterian Church in Conifer Grove in Auckland. I am also involved in the Gospel Faith Messenger ministry with its Prophetic Equipping Days and other outreaches, seeking to empower Christians to hear and recognize the Voice of God making His will clear to them.
